The following is some basic information about stocks.
Stock - the capital raised by a corporation through the issue of shares entitling holders to an ownership interest (equity); "he owns a controlling share of the company's stock.
Stock is basically a way for you to buy a piece of a company. Stocks come in 100 shares each. By buying 100 shares from a company, that means you legally own a piece of that company. People buy to invest in hopes that the company will do well and then their stock prices will raise. When a company is doing well, it costs more to buy a piece of that company.
Take for example, you buy 100 shares for $20 from "BlogCo". Then when BlogCo starts doing better as a company, they now charge $30 for 100 shares. You still own the first 100 and you only paid $20 for them. Now you can sell them to make a profit. The profit in this case would be small, $10.
The Stock Broker is the man who gets someone to buy the stock you want to sell. He carefully watches all the stock his investors own on a computer.
Another way to make profits in the stock industry is to "sell short."
